Fungal nail infections are very common however they may take a long time to go away,  They're caused by the growth of fungal spores that make their way between the toenail and the skin underneath the nail bed. The spores feed off the skin or the keratin in the nail. This type of infection is highly contagious and flourishes in warm, moist environments. They may affect other nails and skin if left untreated and are often thick, brittle, discoloured and smelly.

Thick toenails are often a result of trauma, poorly fitting footwear, ageing and neglect.

Not only are these nails unsightly, they can be painful and affect your quality of life.

Ingrown toenails are a common condition in which the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh. The result is pain, inflamed skin, swelling and, sometimes, an infection. Ingrown toenails usually affect the big toe but can affect any toe.

Hematoma or bruising under the nail is often due to nail trauma and usually grows out with the toenail however; sometimes the nail may fall off or grow thicker if the nail plate is damaged.  On occasion there may an underlying problems and its worth having it checked out by a Podiatrist.

Nail shapes and discolouration may be the result of trauma or natural changes through aging however some changes may be due to underlying diseases such Melanoma, iron deficiency (Koilonychia), heart and lung conditions (clubbing), Psoriasis and Diabetes.

Onycholysis is a condition in which the nail separates from the skin. It may be caused by a nail injury, fungus, or psoriasis.

Trauma may be a result of poor fitting footwear, false nails, or by the repetitive overuse of chemical substances or medication.
