A Doppler Ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate blood flow through the major arteries of the feet. It can diagnose Peripheral Arterial Disease and need for further investigation if required. It is a quick, non-invasive and valuable diagnostic.  Your Podiatrists will check this on your first visit and annually (as required).

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a condition that reduces blood flow in the leg.  Podiatrist are able to check the status of your blood vessels by performing two tests:

Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) compares the blood pressure in the arm against the leg and Toe Pressure Index (TBI) checks for calcification in the small vessels and predicts ischaemia, claudication, wound healing and amputation risk.

Your Podiatrist will use a 10g monofilament (a simple and non-invasive tool) to check the sensation on the bottom of your feet.

Proprioception, is your body’s ability to sense movement, action, and location. It’s present in every muscle movement you have.  Proprioception allows you to walk without consciously thinking about where to place your foot next.  Diabetes and other conditions may inhibit your proprioception control and cause

• Falling when you walk across uneven surface.

• Uncoordinated movement, such as finding it hard to walk straight

• Balance issues, which can lead to problems when you walk up or down stairs or cause you to fall.

Your Podiatrist is able to check your proprioception with a simple and non invasive tool and advice on ways to improve your balance.

Your Podiatrist will check your feet at every visit and note any changes, but they also encourage you to self care in between each visit.  We will educate you on how to check your feet daily, applying moisturiser daily (not in-between toes) and how to file your toenails.  We will offer advice on more suitable footwear and checking for correct fit.

Foot ulcers are deep open wounds which can lead to the risk of infection and further complications.  They can be complex and difficult to heal.  There are many causes such as Diabetes, Poor Circulation (Arterial & Venous), Peripheral Neuropathy, Rheumatoid and immune compromised conditions are also at risk.

 It is very important to have your feet checked on a regular basis to avoid breakdown of your tissues.
