Nail Surgery procedure explained....

Before considering nail surgery please see your Podiatrist to have a full assessment carried out, not all people need nail surgery and not all are suitable due to medical reasons.  Your Podiatrist will take a full medical history, so please bring a list of all up to date medications to your nail surgery assessment appointment.  During the assessment you will have a series of  circulation and neurological tests.  These tests are non-invasive but essential to make sure you are suitable for the surgery to be carried out.  On occasion we may have to have ask permission from your GP before proceeding, especially if  you have any contraindications to having surgery or you are taking certain medications e.g. blood thinners or immunosuppressants etc...

We will then book you in for a suitable time and date.  Please remove all nail varnish prior to surgery.  Please bring a designated driver with you on the day of surgery as you should not drive home, your insurance may be 'null & void' if you drive with local anaesthetic in your system.  It would be advisable to have the rest  of the day off school or work following the procedure.

Please bring a pair of sliders or flip-flops to wear after the surgery as a large dressing will be applied.

Important:  It is advisable for you to bring your Epi Pen / injectable adrenaline with you if you have known allergies.  We do carry some for emergencies on the premises but for safety reasons we recommend having your own supply with you.

Step by step nail surgery procedure.

The Nail surgery procedure  will be explained in full, even if you have been told on a previous visit just so you are fully aware of what is about to happen. A consent form must be signed prior to the administration of local anaesthetic.  Even at this point you can change your mind.  The procedure will not start until you are comfortable and ready.

Step 1.

The toe area to be injected will be cleaned with alcohol or disinfectant.

The local anaesthetic will be injected into both side of the toe having surgery.

The toe is tested to make sure that total anaesthesia has taken place.  The whole toe should be numb and no pain felt at all.

Step 2.

A sterile rubber band called a Tournicot is applied to reduce bleeding,

The whole toenail or part of the nail is removed and checked for any loose bits of toenail.

A chemical called Phenol is applied, which cauterizes the nail matrix  (where the nail is made) and stops the nail part of the nail removed from regrowing.

Step 3.

The tournicot is then removed and the toe is checked.

Sterile dressings are applied to the toe.

If there is another toenail to remove the procedure will start again.

Step 4.

You will be given some spare dressings  to take home and advised how and when to apply them if necessary.  Otherwise your dressing will remain on until your next appointment.   Instructions for after care will also be explained by your Podiatrist.

A follow up appointment is made for a dressing change usually 3-5 days post surgery and this appointment is included in your nail surgery costs.
